A mulcher is a tracked machine with a spinning drum head on the front. Teeth on the drum grind wood into chips as the head passes over it. The head takes standing brush down to the ground and keeps going into the stump. Small stumps get ground flush with the dirt. The tracks spread the weight, so the machine leaves less rut than wheels on soft ground. Everything happens in one pass over the site. The cutting and the cleanup happen at the same time.
Density sets the pace more than acreage does. A field of light brush goes fast. Heavy stems and hardwood take longer for the same acre. Slope and rock slow things down too, and both are common on lots around here. We look at the ground first and give you a price for the area you want cleared. If a section is too steep or too wet for the machine, we say so before we start. You know the size of the job and the cost before the machine comes off the trailer.
A brush hog cuts. It knocks stems down and leaves them lying in the field. It also stops at wrist-thick material. Anything bigger gets driven around, or it breaks the mower. A mulcher grinds instead of cutting. It handles stems a brush hog cannot touch and turns them into chips on the spot. Grinding the stump changes what grows back. Roots that get chewed at the crown do not send up the same rush of shoots. The chip layer also shades the seed bed, so new growth comes in slower and thinner. Most ground still needs a touch-up after a few years. The second pass is a much smaller job. A mower or a brush hog can hold it from then on. That is the usual pattern on old pasture and grown-in fence lines around here.
You get a floor of chips instead of a bare scrape. On a hillside that matters, because bare soil moves the first time it rains hard. The chip layer takes the hit and lets water soak in. Ledge and rocky till sit close to the surface in this part of Vermont. A mulcher rides over rock that would stop a bucket or a rake. Small rock stays put instead of getting pulled up and stacked into piles. The finished ground is walkable and mowable once the chips settle.
Timing is flexible with this work. Frozen ground in late fall and winter carries the machine well and leaves the least mark. Mud season is the hard window, when soaked ground ruts under any weight.
