That split matters, because it changes who shows up on which day. Our part starts before the shell is ordered. We look at where the pool can sit and how deep the cut goes. We also plan where the water and the dirt will go. Then we open the site and cut the pad to the installer's numbers.
The installer brings the shell in and sets it with a crane or an excavator. That crew levels the shell and runs the plumbing, then starts filling it. We stay on site, because the backfill goes in as the water goes up. Sand or gravel packs around the shell in lifts, matched to the water level inside. That keeps the walls from bowing. When the shell is locked in, we bring the grade back up to it. Then we shape the ground so runoff moves away.
Most lots around here have some pitch. A pool needs a flat bench. On a sloped lot that means a cut into the uphill side. The downhill side gets built up with fill. That is excavation work, and it sets up everything after. We figure the cut depth and how much hill comes out. Bigger cuts call for a retaining wall or a graded bank on the high side. We tell you which one the slope needs before the shell is ordered.
Rock is the other question on a hillside. Glacial till here carries boulders, and ledge can sit a few feet down. We probe the ground before we put a firm number on the dig. If ledge turns up mid dig, the choices are moving the pool or breaking rock. Access matters just as much. The delivery truck and the crane need a path wide enough and firm enough to reach the hole. On a tight lot we build that path first and put the yard back after.
A fiberglass shell in the ground is not a finished backyard. Most people want a deck or a concrete patio around the coping. That work comes through the same partner network as the pool. We prep the ground it sits on, with base gravel, compaction, and a slight pitch. Water should run off the deck and away from the shell. If you want a paver patio or a poured slab, tell us early. The deck footprint changes how wide we cut the hole.
The last part is the yard itself. A pool dig moves a lot of dirt. Some of it can stay on site as fill or a raised area. The rest gets hauled off. We finish grade the disturbed ground and leave it ready for seed or loam. Drainage gets checked at the same time. Roof runoff and hillside water head for the lowest point, which is now your pool. A shallow swale or a french drain uphill of the deck moves that water around it.
